Palinuro

Palinuro and its legends captivate tourists with natural beauties and unspoiled places. Protected by the bay, it is a natural shelter for sailors who dock their boats. Argonauts, Phoenicians, and Greeks frequented these places, leaving ancient traces of human settlement. Tombs around the 5th century B.C. and archaeological finds show how the beauty and strategic position of the port favored the establishment of a Greek colony. The name Palinuro recalls the helmsman of Aeneas, who fell in love with a beautiful girl named Kamaratòn, chasing her image to the cliffs of the Cape, which then took his name. The beauty of the rocky coast, the natural arch, and the white beaches make this area one of the most beautiful and historically rich in the world. In the Mingardo valley, through the Devil's Gorge, on the high rock lies the medieval village of San Severino di Centola, preserved intact since it was abandoned due to continuous landslides. The castle dates back to the 11th century and witnessed events involving the Normans Guimondo and Gisulfo in the struggle for lordship over these lands. It is not just about the sea; it is about the Mediterranean diet, Mediterranean scrub extending among myrtle bushes, broom, and heather, and the famous "Primula Palinuri" (an original flower that grows only in this area), characterizing the territory of the Cilento National Park.
